Unimatic Introduces the New Prodiver Collection

While minimalism may be as trendy as ever these days (one look at any modern car interior will tell you that) a lot of brands miss the mark when it comes to balancing that aesthetic with function, or the lack thereof. Not so with Unimatic’s all-new Prodiver line, which promises both a streamlined design language and robust mechanical functionality. But do the watches actually pull it off? Let’s take a deeper dive and find out.

Perhaps the biggest factor in Unimatic’s favor here is the Italian brand’s penchant for design cohesiveness across their lineup. Even before taking the new Prodiver into consideration, Unimatic watches share aesthetic hallmarks, namely chunky, round indexes, sans serif typefaces, and symmetrical dial balance. Even models that deviate from this norm, like the UT1 and UT4, which feature hour numerals instead, carry a uniformly round and hardy profile, which gives each Unimatic watch friendly-yet-tough dimensions. This is all personal conjecture, of course, but rarely does a brand manage to maintain consistency in design across their entire lineup quite as well as Unimatic does.

Back to the Prodiver, though; like most other watches by the brand, it also bears the signature round indexes, though it adds some legitimate dive watch pedigree, too. Each of the three new Modello Uno models sports a democratically-sized case, measuring at 40mm in diameter and 49mm lug to lug. The case thickness is a healthy 14.4mm with the domed sapphire crystal, and features a 120-click mono-directional bezel and a black ceramic diving insert with Super-LumiNova BG209 markers.

Three models are available, with the international orange color variant being the standout, and as a native San Franciscan, I am partial to the color, perhaps best known for being worn by the Golden Gate Bridge. Still, two other models are available, both with matte black dials. What really separates the models apart, though, is their water resistance numbers: the orange and one of the black models (reference numbers U1-PD3-OR and U1-PD3-B respectively) hold 300-meter ratings, while the second black watch, U1S-T-PD6-B, sports a hearty 600 meters of resistance. The U1S-T-PD6-B also swaps in the 316L cases of the 300-meter versions for an ultralight sandblasted titanium construction. All three models come on a heavy-duty nylon strap.

The stainless steel models are powered by the Seiko NH35A automatic movement, while the titanium watch tags in a heavier-duty Swiss-made Sellita SW200-1 movement. Hands and indices on all models are double-lume, and contrast nicely with both the orange and black dials. While the Unimatic Prodiver line doesn’t push many boundaries, it does prove that minimalism doesn’t have to come at the cost of function—or even a little splash of zesty color.

The Unimatic Prodiver stainless steel U1-PD3-OR and U1-PD3-B models retail for approximately $872, while the titanium U1S-T-PD6-B retails for approximately $1,743. All models are limited to 300 pieces each. Unimatic
