Watches, Stories, and Gear: The Jot N Pop, Stirling Timepiece’s Jarvis GMT, and The Return of Iconic Designs From Tom Bihn and Giant Mouse

“Watches, Stories, and Gear” is a roundup of our favorite content, watch or otherwise, from around the internet. Here, we support other creators, explore interesting content that inspires us, and put a spotlight on causes we believe in. Oh, and any gear we happen to be digging on this week. We love gear.

This week’s Watches, Stories and Gear is sponsored by Stirling Timepieces. Check out the new Jarvis Diver GMT and a link to their website below.

Notorious EDC and Big Idea Design Create the Jot N Pop

These days, collaboration is the name of the game. Whether it’s teaming up with a famous soda brand (looking at you Seiko and Jack Mason), or two EDC powerhouse brands creating something entirely different. When our team was at Blade Show this year, we got a sneak peak of the first Jot N Pop prototype and knew it was going to be something special.  According to Tom Medovich, “The Jot N’ Pop is what happens when you mash up Big Idea Design’s Pocket Pro with the Beer Bomb. A titanium pen that’s built to do whatever you throw at it, as long as whatever you throw at it is writing stuff down or opening bottles.”  Regardless of how they came up with this idea, we can’t think of a more perfect tool for staying hydrated and taking notes!

Built upon the design of the Pocket Pro, the new Jot N Pop is entirely machined from Grade 5 titanium (no plastic parts!), with a pocket clip made from grade 4 Ti for spring tension. Arguably the most notable feature of this design, the bottle opener, has been designed to pop the top of your favorite beverages with style. The Jot N Pop fits Parker Style inserts and ships with a Schmidt P900 refill included.  To learn more about this collaboration or to order one for yourself, check out Big Idea Design’s product page!

Mission Ready: The Jarvis GMT Diver by Stirling Timepieces

In the sea of sporty watches, there are tool watches, and then there are tool watches. Stirling Timepiece, named after British Army officer and SAS-founder David Stirling, is focused on developing tool watches not only in name but in practice. Every model is designed and tested in the hands of an operator in the field, whether military or law enforcement, and Stirling Timepieces charitably a portion of each sale to benefit veterans, their families, and active-duty personnel. It is in that spirit that Stirling proudly introduces the latest addition to its purpose-built lineup: the Jarvis GMT Diver.

The Jarvis GMT Diver comes in two configurations: brushed stainless steel or cloaked in black DLC. Both were thoughtfully developed with feedback from operators using and testing the watches in real-life settings. It is obvious that legibility is the name of the game here, and the Jarvis sports a no-nonsense utilitarian aesthetic that undoubtedly aids its wearers in remaining focused on the mission at hand. Aesthetically, the only major applications of color are red, in two places: the “GMT” text on the dial and the tip of the 24-hour GMT hand. The dial’s custom pattern is inspired by set cords used by Charles Jarvis during his heroic actions in combat. The new Jarvis GMT Diver represents value beyond simply owning a battle-tested timepiece; it’s knowing that the watch is supporting the very same community that made it possible. Giant Mouse and Carryology Announce the ACE Grand Auxikko

As Giant Mouse set out to create their “magnum opus”, they wound up designing the GM5. With titanium scales and a saber ground Elmax blade, the GM5 quickly rose in popularity and sold out quickly. Knowing this design was in high demand, the Giant Mouse team reworked it to create the ACE Grand, a similar looking design that swapped titanium for micarta while keeping the same steel and blade shape, aiming to be more EDC Friendly. Overall, both models were a resounding success and have been highly requested since selling out.

When the team at Carryology came knocking, looking for an “ultimate addition” to their past two collaborative designs,  the ACE Grand seemed to be the perfect choice. Drawing heavily on its GM5 roots, and adding a bit of Carryology Flair, the new GMxC ACE Grand Auxikko will feature engraved titanium scales, an orange backspacer for a pop of color, and a high saber grind Elmax blade. While the final price remains unknown at this time, you can learn more about the collaborative design process, and its release on Carryology’s Design Article.

Tom Bihn’s Coveted “Guide’s Edition” Colorway Returns

If you haven’t heard of Tom Bihn, let me introduce you to an extremely iconic brand in the softgood industry.  Since 1972, Tom Bihn has been hard at work designing and manufacturing backpacks, totes, and travel accessories to exacting standards, with top of the line materials.  While their designs have certainly earned them high praise, they might be most well known for their vast use of colored fabrics, allowing customers to stand out, or blend in as they choose.  One of their most iconic colorways, dubbed the “Guide’s Edition”, swaps the standard black trim for an eye-catching Coyote trim, aimed to hide dust and dirt while blending in with natural surroundings.

Now only released in small batches, the Guide’s Edition colorway will be returning soon for a limited run of Synik 26’s. While the Synik 26 has a long heritage as a hybrid travel / EDC pack, this new spin creates a wonderful blend of color that feels right at home in the city or on the trail.  This release will feature six distinct colorways, Black, Aubergine, Mars, Raspberry, Navy, and our personal favorite, Saguaro. Full details of the launch, and technical specs for the bag, can be found on the Tom Bihn Website.
