Hands-On: Behrens and Vianney Halter Collaborate on the Impressive Master Collection “KWH” Limited Edition
Vianney Halter, the legendary independent watchmaker, has collaborated with Behrens, the Chinese indie that over the last few years has gradually upped the ante in terms of their watchmaking and their own ambitions in the international watch industry. The new watch, the Behrens Master Collection “KWH” Limited Edition, is sure to be one of the most talked about watches of Geneva Watch Days 2025, and should cement Behrens as a real player in the independent watch scene, while reintroducing Halter to a new generation of enthusiasts.
Collaborations within the indie watch world are frequent, so it’s worth spending a moment to contextualize the importance of Vianney Halter working with Behrens on this watch in particular. Halter is considered by many to be on the proverbial Mt. Rushmore of indie watchmakers who set the stage for the modern avant-garde watchmaking moment that we’re in the midst of. His Antiqua, a truly radical design upon its release, is still one of the most influential watches of its era, or any other. That he’s chosen to not just lend his name to a Behrens release but actually create an all new caliber for it feels like the strongest possible endorsement, and a signal that he and the young Chinese brand share a certain watchmaking philosophy.
The chief aesthetic inspiration behind the new piece is the square shape of antique electricity meters and the concept of “pixel nostalgia” (think video games like Snake and Tetris and you get the idea). Time is read in a somewhat unusual way – this is a watch that you need to be “taught” how to interpret. But once you get the hang of it, it’s actually fairly intuitive. Minutes are read via an axial, rotating display in the lower half of the dial. To the left of the minutes axis, you’ll find a power reserve and day/night indicator. The caseback features a moonphase and date display, both of which are controlled via pushers at the top of the case. The hour display is the most interesting feature of the watch in my opinion. The current hour can be determined by the location of the micro-chain running around the perimeter of the watch. This ruby-bearing chain system is directly inspired by those old Snake games, and is a pretty ingenious development. The simple act of setting the time, and seeing the chain rotate around the dial at the speed at which you manipulate the crown, is one of the hidden pleasures of the watch.
The movement is fit into a rectangular case measuring 35mm by 41mm. It’s available in white or rose gold, with each metal limited to just nine pieces. The retail price is $44,800. While that’s on the high side for Behrens, it follows a trajectory they’ve been on for several years now as they’ve gained considerable credibility in the independent watchmaking community, following collaborations with the likes of Konstantin Chaykin as well as the release of the BHR030 Ultralight. Their continued pushing of the envelope is a big moment for Chinese watchmaking, which too often is ignored and disrespected.
As mentioned, this release is also an important moment for Halter. He has lent his name to other affordably priced projects in the recent past, but those watches were really just making clever use of his brand and his well defined aesthetic. This is an actual watchmaking experiment with a brand that sells a lot of watches well under $10,000, so a different endeavor entirely. When he personally presented this watch to us in our Geneva Watch Days meeting, he spoke of the genuine connection he felt with the Behrens team, and if you look at their signature pieces and the unique design language they’ve created, you can understand why the relationship seems to be so strong: they are each focused on mechanics as art, and experiment with an infusion of sci-fi motifs and other rather whimsical design elements.
